Area 2: Uncovering Biological Mechanisms 

We are investigating how PFAS disrupt normal metabolic function by studying their effects on human liver, pancreatic, and fat cells. Using advanced 3D human tissue models that closely mimic real organs, we are examining how individual PFAS chemicals and realistic PFAS mixtures alter key processes involved in obesity, type 2 diabetes (T2D), and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD). 

We are combining these models with cutting-edge molecular tools, including single-cell RNA sequencing and other multi-omics approaches, to identify the cellular pathways and molecular changes triggered by PFAS exposure. We are also testing whether these effects can be reversed after exposure ends. 

By revealing the biological mechanisms underlying PFAS-related metabolic toxicity, this area will provide critical insights into how these chemicals contribute to disease and identify potential targets for prevention and treatment
